3P ESCALATING CONSEQUENCES
COURSE OUTLINE
The purpose of this class is to give you the tools to create a well crafted story that lures the reader from paragraph to paragraph, page to page and chapter to chapter. To do that, writers have to be part craftsman and part psychoanalyst, figuring out the best ways to draw the reader in and keep him turning pages. Writers do that by combining a number of techniques, and one of the most important is escalating consequences.
Skilled use of Escalating Consequences will rivet the reader to the page. Skilled use of Escalating Consequences creates drama. Drama will turn boring events into attention grabbers. Without escalating consequences, the reader will quickly lose interest.
In this class we examine the structure of escalating consequences to increase the intensity of both action and emotion in your story and create drama. From the first sentence of the first paragraph, to scene, sequel, dramatic act and story, whether you’re writing a heartwarming tale or a nail-biting thriller, you’ll want to learn the four basic techniques to escalate consequences in your stories and keep your reader flipping those pages. Some of the things we’ll study are:
1. Escalation overview: from sentences to scene, sequence, dramatic act & story
2. Escalation of conflict
3. Escalation of action
4. Escalation of emotion
It's my aim to make this class as easy, as enjoyable, and as productive as possible. By the end of this course you should understand the theory behind escalating consequences and be able to identify where you need to escalate consequences in your story and put the techniques to use to intensify the action and emotion in your story to create drama.
